Welcome to our Forest School Level 3 Programme Training.  Approved by the Forest School Association and awarded by the Open College Network West Midlands, this Level 3 Certificate provides the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to prepare learners for employment as a Forest School Leader.

The training will combine key principles of Forest School with best practice from Environment and Nature Education, child development, the world of play (wild, free and therapeutic play) delivered by our professional team who have many years experience.

The course will include:

An OCN accreditation training carries a total of 18 credits at Level 3 and consists of 5 units:

  • Learning and Development of a Forest School Programme (6 credits)
  • Planning a Forest School Programme (3 credits)
  • Practical Skills for a Forest School Programme (3 credits)
  • Delivery of a Forest School Programme (3 credits)
  • Forest School Programme and the Woodland Environment (3 credits)

Who is the training designed for?

This Level 3 Training is designed for professionals already working with young people who wish to establish and deliver a Forest School/Environmental Education programme.

It is appropriate for those over the age of 21 years with relevant Level 2 or above qualifications (teachers, youth workers, playworkers, rangers, ecologists or teaching assistants with significant experience of working with young people or adults (at least two years).

Are there any other course requirements?

Assessment will combine written work, use of practice file, reflective logs, practical demonstrations and group discussion. This training requires a significant level of paper work e.g short written assignments, risk assessments and health and safety policies. If you have any concerns in this area please let us know in advance.

First Aid

Participants should also have access to a group with whom they will run a six-week Forest School Programme. All participants must be DBS checked and hold a first aid certificate by the end of the Training. This can be a 16-hour ITC outdoor first aid certificate or equivalent. A tailored two-day First Aid in the Outdoors, delivered and certified by a provider registered with the HSE, is also acceptable. Facilitators: Our trainings are led by experienced and passionate staff with many years of teaching experience. Our trainers include Circle of Life Rediscovery Director, Marina Robb, Mark Lloyd and Anna Richardson. Marina and Anna have co-authored the popular, 'Learning with Nature: A how to guide to inspiring children through outdoor games and activities'.
