Joe has a background working as an adolescent outreach worker and as an outdoor educator, particularly in adventure based programmes, incorporating climbing, canoeing and camping, for young offenders, children at risk, young carers, and the unemployed.
More recently, he has spent time in Scotland working with groups of young people engaged in the summer programme of wilderness trips and activities run by the John Muir Trust.
He has developed his interests in these areas by pursuing an academic line of enquiry, in collaboration with the JMT, resulting in a PhD focused on the emotional and psychological well-being benefits that may be obtained through direct exposure to the natural environment and how these experiences may shape environmental attitudes and
behaviours.
