Tony Cealy is an actor, theatre practitioner and trainer, I have been working for over 14 years in using drama and theatre to educate and empower, plan, deliver and evaluate projects, courses, workshops and performances to adults, young people and groups all over the UK and increasingly internationally.
I am committed to the value of theatre and drama for development, and to furthering the education and welfare of socially disadvantaged people, young people and adults. Participatory drama, theatre and related activities are particularly useful for individuals in the criminal justice system and under the auspices of the social services.
My approach is useful for advising, educating and training staff in relevant agencies to develop the necessary skills and maintain the use of these art forms in a variety of environments.
I believe developing arts work training with disadvantaged people and their related communities can stimulate growth and positive change. Training arts and non-arts professionals to use drama and arts techniques in both participatory workshop and performance-based work provides opportunities for exploring issues and themes pertinent to lives, communities and society. My work aims to develop interpersonal skills, self-esteem and empowerment of participants.
I have adapted my approach to empowerment and advocacy work for use with a wide range of service user groups E.g. people in Local Authority care or Special needs education, or mental health settings with emotional and behavioural problems, living in supported housing. I have also worked successfully with refugees & asylum seekers; young people at risk, drug and alcohol users, the homeless, young parents, pupil referral units and the elderly.
I particularly enjoy programme development work with staff providing services to these groups.
